Thirteen of the fourteen carry a ring of their own. Where a state carries two or three, the count sits under its code and tapping opens its group in the list instead of picking a ring for you. Illinois is the one with no ring of its own — the Metro East practices came in with the St. Louis ring, and they're lit because that's where they stand.

Sixteen rings are walked. That's the whole count, and it's why the map is dark from the Rockies west and from the Ohio east. We could list the metros we mean to get to next and grey them out, and every directory you've ever used would do exactly that — but a name on a list reads like a place with something behind it, and there's nothing behind them yet. A state lights up the day somebody has gone through it practice by practice and checked every number against the practice's own website. Not the day we decide to.

How the book is put together

Inside a ring the listings sort into four lanes — the ones whose own site says overnight, large animal and mixed practice, poultry and goats, and the ones who'll drive out to you. A practice sits in a lane because its website says so, not because it seemed likely. Each lane also has a page of its own that runs the whole book end to end, if what you need is the animal rather than the town.

A ring is a metro and the counties that drive into it, not a city limit. If your county drives to Memphis for anything serious, you're in the Memphis ring even if you live in Mississippi — which is why Memphis is listed under Mississippi and Arkansas as well as Tennessee. A ring is filed under every state it actually holds a practice in.

The South and the Midwest first, because that's the ground we know and the ground where a farm call is still a normal Tuesday. Who keeps this book is on the about page. There's no inbox on it for corrections yet, and we're not going to print an address that isn't there — the day there is one, it goes right here.

Their site or nothing

Phone, address, hours and any 24-hour claim have to appear on the practice's own website. Not a listing site, not a review page, not a map card. If their site doesn't say it, the line stays blank or the practice comes out of the book.

Hours in their words

Hours are quoted, not summarized, and never rendered as “open now.” A clinic that closes early on the day you need them is exactly the case a status light gets wrong. Read the quote and call.

Nothing is for sale

No rankings, no sponsored placements, no advertising, no affiliate links anywhere in the vet book. Nobody paid to be on a page, and nobody can pay to move up one. Order is by lane and by species, then alphabetical.
